VENTURA CITY FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION &
VENTURA CITY FIREFIGHTERS AUXILIARY
GIVES SUPPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

By: Doug Miser, President
Ventura City Firefighters Association
Posted: 05/03/12

On Thursday April 19th, Local 3431ventura the Ventura City Firefighters Association, and the Ventura City Firefighters Auxiliary presented two checks totaling $1,000 to two local non-profit organizations in Ventura. The recipients in this case were the Tenderlife Maternity Home and the Douglas Penfield Special Education School program.

The Tenderlife Maternity Home takes in pregnant women who are homeless and or who are in unsafe surroundings. The program provides a safe home with life skills instruction and is a gateway for independent drug and alcohol free living. The support system additionally provides paths for further education and employment.

The Douglas Penfield Special education program serves several locations throughout Ventura. They incorporate developmentally appropriate curriculum for students with physical disabilities to develop the skills of sitting, standing, and walking while participating in their school activities. They also serve the needs of students with autism and/or developmental delays. This educational program provides intensive, specialized instruction designed to meet the unique needs of these students.

The Ventura City Firefighters Association strives to be involved in many local charities and fund-raising efforts. Meantime, the Ventura City Firefighters Auxiliary Board identified these two worthwhile organizations based on the services they provide the citizens of Ventura.

"While both organizations have completely different missions of service, we felt that both contribute such a valuable service to our community. Public safety and caring for the public is the core mission of the Ventura City Firefighters; as a result, we felt that both organizations are compliments to making Ventura a better place," explained Sherri Contreras and Director Angela Smith. "We are proud to help support these organizations. Our association currently works to support Ribbons of Life Ventura (Breast Cancer Support Group), Relay for Life (American Cancer Society), Gold Dust Galla (Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation), Spark of Love Toy Drive, St. Baldrick's (Childhood Cancer Research), and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (Ventura Chapter)."

Working on the streets of Ventura and being called into people's homes each day provides us with a unique perspective to immediate care. These organizations make a major difference into the long-term care and support of our community.

"If we can help support them...we will," said President Doug Miser of the Ventura City Firefighters Association.

The money was raised at a sponsored 'Casino Night' held by the Ventura City Firefighters Auxiliary on November 18th at the Ventura Elks Lodge on Knoll Avenue. Call (805) 390-0642 for more information. 3875 Telegraph Road o PMB 249 Ventura, California 93003.

SUMMER MUSIC CONCERT SERIES PROPOSED
FOR ABOVE CITY HALL & BELOW
GRANTS PARK - A WORK-IN-PROCESS

The hills above Ventura City Hall and just below Grant Park may be alive this summer "With The Sound of Music" (not the actual musical, however, with music itself) which is to include a "Summer Music Concert Series" produced by Mark Hartley a promoter of country western singers and others. This live-stage facility will be held under a huge temporary tent-like structure with sitting enough to fill up the tent less the stage area.

The concert series is to be comprised of jazz, folk, country, and/or possibly comedy with the goal in mind not to compete with other venues held at the Santa Barbara Bowl. The concerts are to be scheduled for mid-week as not to cause interference with Downtown Ventura weekends' business as usual for locals and tourists' shopping, eating out, playing, and, etc. Jeffrey Lambert also implied that these concerts would not compete with other city events, i.e., 4th of July Street Festival, Ventura County Fair, Music Under The Stars and the like.* The concerts, however, will possibly coincide with other venues playing downtown during the week at such places as the Majestic Ventura Theatre.** The target dates for the concerts are to start in July and to run through October.

The parking lot just next to and behind the upper level of city hall and just below the upper parking lot is to be designated for VIP and the handicap. Shuttling foot traffic from Poli Street in front of city hall to the concert is in the working plan for those who find the walk up to the concert to steep. Planners mentioned nothing about providing available transportation for those who park in parking facilities in downtown who, also, find this farther climb up the hill up to city hall to steep.

At the Monday, April 30th evening meeting presented by Jeffrey Lambert, AICP, Director of Community Development, there was no strong oppositions expressed regarding the concerts from the between 50 and 75 attendees including some local neighboring residents to city hall and its parking areas. The city has not given the green light at date; however, with the lack of opposition, the project will move forward addressing the issues still to be worked out; those issues are: traffic, parking, noise, fire and safety concerns all of which appear to being workable. The next meeting is scheduled for May 24th.

* The City of Ventura or the County of Ventura mostly produces these events.
**These musical groups are mostly held in local businesses where entertainment is either an added feature in the nightlife and/or the main venue.

KIDS & FAMILIES TOGETHER

By: Lynn Smith
Posted: 05/05/12

Kids & Families Together opened its door in January of 2000 to fill the gaps in services to families that have come together through foster care, kinship care (most often grandparents raising grandchildren) and/or adoption. Kids & Families Together is a not-for profit organization that has become one of the county's leading contractors providing services to children and families within Ventura County's child welfare system. Based in a historic Victorian in downtown Ventura, Kids & Families Together provides services countywide. Last year, Kids & Families Together opened Alice's House, a cooperative living home for young women who have "aged out" of the foster care system.

David Friedlander, Executive Director, recently noted that since the organization's inception there have been great strides in the information, education and services provided to these caregivers who have been asked to care for some of the county's most vulnerable children. Many of these children have witnessed or been victims of family violence and/or abuse, were prenatally exposed to drugs and/or other harmful substances and have experienced trauma, loss, grief and multiple placements.

Parenting these children can often be abnormally challenging and requires increased knowledge and support services that will keep both the parents and children emotionally and physically healthy and safe.

At the core of Kids & Families Together are its attachment-focused support and mental health services. Using a complex set of interventions focused on helping caregivers create secure attachment experiences for the child, Kids & Families

Together's approach to therapy differs from other models, which rely on the primacy of the clinician-child relationship as the core of the healing process by shifting the focus to the support and development of greater security in the caregiver-child relationship. This relationship provides the catalyst for healing and the context for sustained support after the therapy ends. Treatment interventions are grounded in several important core guidelines of treatment based on the "relational model" of change.

Treatment focuses on building "reflective capacity," a process that helps reduce the child's reactivity to traumatic triggers, dysregulation due to overwhelming emotional states, and rigid defensive-opting strategies. This is done by educating them on how to stay emotionally engaged and cognitively aware of how the present is different from the past.

Corrective emotional experiences in treatment are premised on the notion of "inter-subjectivity," a process of mutual interaction and engagement in which the caregiver and child recognize, share and adapt to each other's feelings.

Enhanced reflective capacity is grounded in experiences of emotional support and promotes the building of a coherent narrative. Relational trauma can take a toll on a child's development - effects can be seen across multiple domains of development. Therefore specific attention is given to skill building, especially in the social and emotional areas of functioning.

Another area of focus for Kids & Families Together is kinship support and services. At any given time there are approximately 900 children in child welfare; half of these placements are with people who are considered family. The 2000 Census reported that Ventura County has over 5,000 grandparents who considered themselves primary caregivers to their relative children. Often these caregivers present their own unique problems of embarrassment, shame, legal and educational challenges, as well as fear of the future.

Our experience shows that it often does "take a village" to support these families. In collaboration with Ventura County Behavioral Health, Kids & Families Together has launched the formation of Community Kinship Coalitions in four targeted areas of Ventura County: Oxnard, El Rio and Port Hueneme; Simi Valley and Moorpark; Ventura and Santa Paula; Fillmore and Piru. These coalitions will identify kinship families and local supports that can assist them in their care giving.

Effective in January 2012, youth previously required to exit the child welfare system at age 18 will have the option to continue to receive support and services until age 21. Kids & Families Together Alice's House's concept provides an excellent opportunity for the "emerging adults" to experience independence while receiving supportive services. Kids & Families Together hopes to expand this program in the future. Volunteers are welcomed and needed.

Kids & Families Together has internships and training opportunities available.
